We enrich the lives of young people from all over the world, through residential English Language and activity courses

Teaching

Didactic Programme

We offer 15 hours teaching per week. Class sizes are no more than 15 and the average class size is 13. We ensure all classes contain the minimum possible age range.

There are three hours of lessons per weekday morning. If a group arrive mid-week they will still complete the full 15 hours by having an extra afternoon session on one day. Very often this will be in the form of a town trail organised by their teachers to avoid spending too long in the classroom.

We do not generally have lessons on Saturday or Sunday.

Placements

The levels are established on the first teaching day by a written placement test. This is followed by an oral lesson where the teacher assesses the oral competence of each student against an established set of criteria. The standard course offers 15 hours of tuition per week. The levels we offer are based on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for languages and are as follows: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Good Intermediate, Near Advanced.

Teachers

Each class is taught by two teachers who alternate after the first lesson: lessons are one and a half hours long with a 30 minute break in between. All our teachers are qualified and have varying amounts of experience.

They are chosen for their enthusiasm, commitment and a wish to work with young people. They have access to a library of varied EFL materials and whilst following a specially designed course, are free to supplement and be creative in accordance with students’ needs.

The Course

The focus of the course is on communication: broadening students’ active and passive knowledge and skills and increasing their confidence in using English. We aim to solidify and build on students’ existing knowledge of English and to push them into new areas of the language through exposure to mother tongue teachers and varied teaching methods.

We include preparation and follow-up classes related to the excursions as a key part of the curriculum. In addition, students work together with their teacher on a course project, using appropriate technology such as computers and cameras, which forms the basis of a final presentation at the end of their stay.

All students receive an UKLC attendance certificate at the end of the course.
